During a Tuesday, April 5, appearance on The Today Show, former O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark took aim at a controversial Investigation Discovery series attempting to exonerate the fallen football legend.
“It is nonsense, because there is no real logic, there’s no evidence, there’s nothing to back it up, nothing,” Clark, 62, told Today’s Savannah Guthrie.
The lawyer-turned-writer then went on to explain that Hard Evidence: O.J. Is Innocent (a project backed by actor Martin Sheen) will supposedly tell the tale of the “trial of the century” in a way that places the blame for the late Nicole Brown Simpson’s murder on O.J.’s son, Jason.
Clark, who believes Simpson, now 68, is guilty of killing his estranged wife, has never thought for a second that the former NFL star’s now-45-year-old son — who he shared with first wife Marguerite Whitley Simpson — committed the crime.
“[Accusing Jason] to me the most hideous thing you can possibly do,” Clark said. “Jason Simpson is the one they’re saying is guilty, and he can’t defend himself. What is he going to do? Say, ‘It’s not me, it’s my dad.’ What a hideous thing for them to do. I can’t even tell you how awful it is. And it’s baseless.”
On October 3, 1995, Simpson was found not guilty of murdering his ex or her friend, Ron Goldman. At the time, Clark served as the lead prosecutor on the case, which has been dramatized on FX’s miniseries The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
While Clark has admitted that portions of the show have been exaggerated for television, she appreciates Sarah Paulson’s portrayal of her.
“I think she’s a genius,” she raved to Guthrie, 44, of the actress. “I try to just watch her, because she’s fabulous. She’s amazing.”
When reflecting back on Simpson’s verdict, the Blood Defense author couldn’t help but lament: “To say that I’m at peace with the verdict, no. No, justice was not sung.”
Simpson was found guilty of armed robbery, kidnapping and other felonies in 2008. He is currently serving a 33-year sentence at a Nevada prison.
