Meghan Trainor is just one of the many stars to pay tribute to Christina Grimmie. The “Me Too” singer honored the late Voice alum during a show at BLI’s Summer Jam in Wantagh, New York, on Saturday, June 11.
Trainor, 22, dedicated her performance of “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” to the late singer during the concert. The 2015 ballad features John Legend.
“So if you will please sing it with me as a shoutout to our girl Christina,” Trainor told the crowd. “This one’s for her. Let’s sing nice and loud.”
The Massachusetts native paid homage hours after it was confirmed that Grimmie died at the age of 22. Grimmie was shot and killed by 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl outside the Plaza Live theater in Orlando, Florida, on Friday. At the time, she was in the middle of a meet-and-greet with fans following her show.
As previously reported, Grimmie’s older brother Marcus Grimmie tackled Loibl before the gunman killed himself. Marcus opened up about his sister’s death in a heartbreaking Facebook post on Saturday.
“I really don’t have much to say about anything and am just blown away with the prayers and support,” he wrote. “Christina was more than my sister. She was a partner in life. A superstar. A goofball. Introverted. And a friend to everyone. Genuinely. But above all … she was my baby sister. She loved the Lord and her family and was always there for me and I honestly don’t know what I’ll do without her.”
Christina finished in third place on season 6 of The Voice in 2014. Her coach, Adam Levine, has offered to pay for her funeral arrangements.
“Behati [Prinsloo] and I are absolutely devastated and heartbroken by Christina Grimmie’s death,” the Maroon 5 frontman, 37, tweeted over the weekend. “Our hearts go out to her family.”
