Olympians Julie Johnston, Daryl Homer Talk Selfie Etiquette

To selfie or not to selfie: that is the question. For some Olympians, like fencer Daryl Homer, the ubiquitous pose can be a little embarrassing.

“I have taken a selfie and a couple of people called me out on it, so I’ve tried to stop. So selfies are not in my arsenal,” the 25-year-old says in a new NBC Olympics video. “Other men were jealous, so I had to stop.”

BMX-er Alise Post thinks selfies are OK — if her dog Mila is involved. “There’s definitely more than one take,” she explains, saying that her pup often turns away when her phone comes out. “I’ve got to be quick in the moment!”

The athletes agreed on one thing across the board: lighting.

“The key to a good selfie is lighting!” says swimmer Elizabeth Beisel, who just qualified for her third Games this week.

MyKayla Skinner, who hopes to qualify in gymnastics this month, also seeks the best possible lighting when she turns the camera on herself. “I walk around the house – ‘Does it look good here? Or over here?’” she explains.

But nothing makes for a better selfie than President Obama!

“My favorite selfie, the most recent one, is with the President that we took,” says soccer star Julie Johnston. “It was all Abby Wambach’s doing. He was about to walk away and she was like, ‘Wait, but maybe we should do a selfie?’ And so he was like, ‘Yeah, of course.’ Not very many people have a selfie with the President, and our team does. It’s a pretty cool selfie.”
