Jennifer Garner on Ben Affleck: ‘We Are Definitely a Modern Family’

Family is what you make it, and Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck intend to make theirs happy. Though the couple split after 10 years of marriage in June 2015 — with a bit of drama in the aftermath — they remain friendly for the sake of their children and have even vacationed together in Europe.

Speaking about their relationship on the Today show on Thursday, August 4, Garner, 44, told cohost Natalie Morales that while their situation isn’t necessarily conventional, they’ve been able to make it work for kids Violet, 10, Seraphina, 7, and Samuel, 4.

“We are definitely a modern family,” the Miracles From Heaven actress said of coparenting with Affleck, 43. “We’re doing really well.”

They’re doing so well, in fact, that some reports claimed they were reconciling. They aren’t — a source told Us Weekly they’re “100 percent still separated” — but they do try to spend time together as a family. Earlier this summer, Garner and the kids even relocated temporarily to the U.K. to be near Affleck while he filmed there.

“Ben was working in London on Justice League, and I felt like, well, the kids should have that experience,” she explained on the Today show. “And he and I are great friends and we just all went en masse.”

Told by Morales how “admirable” it is that they’ve been able to coparent so amicably, the Alias alum replied, “It has to be [that way]. You don’t have a choice. It has to be.”

That “family first” perspective is what drew Garner to her latest movie, Nine Lives, about a workaholic businessman who finds himself trapped in the body of his daughter’s cat. “I just love the idea of celebrating the idea that parenting is about time,” she told Morales. “You can’t buy parenting, no matter what. You have to actually get down on the floor and spend some time together.”
