Beyonce Brings Mothers of Gun Violence Victims to 2016 MTV VMAs

Making a statement. Beyoncé brought the mothers of gun violence victims Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Oscar Grant and Trayvon Martin to the 2016 MTV VMAs at NYC’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday, August 28.

Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr; Brown’s mother, Lezley McSpadden; Grant’s mother, Wanda Johnson; and Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, who are often called the Mothers of the Movement, posed with the pop superstar, 34, on the red carpet.

All of the women except Johnson appeared on Beyoncé’s record-breaking visual album Lemonade, holding photos of their late sons, who were victims of high-profile police shootings. Their deaths have been major catalysts for the Black Lives Matter movement across the country. Lemonade is nominated for 11 awards at this year’s VMAs, including Video of the Year for “Formation” and Best Female Video for “Hold Up.”

The “Formation” singer, who will be performing at the ceremony, was also accompanied by her daughter, Blue Ivy, and other special guests from Lemonade on the red carpet, including Chloe and Halle Bailey, Winnie Harlow and Quvenzhané Wallis.

Beyoncé turned heads in a sheer, formfitting gown with an enormous feathery collar and accessorized with more than $12 million worth of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds and emeralds.
