To quote one Twitter fan, Al Roker is all of us. The NBC weatherman didn’t hold back when offering his take on swimmer Ryan Lochte‘s Rio robbery scandal on the Today show on Friday, August 19, and the no-holds-barred moment quickly became a viral video.
“He lied. He lied to you, he lied to Matt Lauer, he lied to his mom,” Roker told Billy Bush. “He left his teammates hanging while he skedaddled. There was no robbery, there was no pull over. He lied.”
His rant was edited into a hilarious video by Cafe.com, which went viral and turned Roker into a trending topic on Twitter on Saturday. The video, complete with sound effects, features several shots of Roker stirring his drink as he slams the 12-time Olympic medalist.
“This is why I love Al Roker,” one commenter tweeted. “Al Roker, you stirred that drink for all of America,” wrote another.
As Us Weekly previously reported, Lochte and three fellow Olympic swimmers claimed on Sunday, August 14, that they were held up and robbed at gunpoint after a night out in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian authorities later accused the gold medalist and his teammates Jimmy Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger of making up the story.
While Lochte arrived back in the U.S. earlier this week, Bentz and Conger were pulled off a homebound flight by Brazilian authorities, and Feigen was detained.
Police announced that the swimmers had not been held at gunpoint, as Lochte claimed, but instead had vandalized a gas station bathroom and were questioned by armed guards before they paid for the damage and left in a taxi.
Bentz and Conger were allowed to leave the country on Thursday, August 18, after being interviewed by police, and Feigen made a $10,800 donation to a local charity before he was allowed to fly back to the U.S.
Lochte apologized for his behavior in an Instagram post on Friday, August 19, and is set to sit-down for an interview with Lauer for an exclusive interview on Saturday, August 20.
