Beyonce Was a No-Show at Emmys 2016: ‘She Was Never Scheduled to Perform’

Hold up … Where was Beyoncé? The “Sorry” singer, 35, was noticeably absent from the 2016 Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 18, despite being nominated for four awards for her latest visual album, Lemonade. Bey was expected to attend the ceremony and was even marked on the seating chart — but where was she?

“Beyoncé got sick and decided to rest her vocal cords before her next tour dates,” a source tells Us Weekly. “She just wasn’t feeling up to it, and it’s always a big production for her going anywhere with her team, glam and everything.”

Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed Lemonade film, which debuted on HBO in April, was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety Special and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, the latter of which it lost to Fox’s Grease: Live, sending the Beyhive into a frenzy.

Despite her absence, Queen Bey was grateful for the nods. “She was very appreciative of the nominations,” the source tells Us. “She doesn’t want to risk having to cancel any more shows, so she decided to rest.”

Earlier this month, Beyoncé postponed the East Rutherford, New Jersey, stop of her mega successful Formation World Tour after being placed on vocal rest amid her 35th birthday celebrations. The MetLife Stadium concert, which was rescheduled to October 7, was the only date the star was forced to move, resuming her tour days later in St. Louis.

There were also rumors Sunday night that Jay Z‘s wife might take the stage at the 2016 Emmys, but a second source exclusively tells Us, “Beyoncé was never scheduled to perform at the Emmys.”

Like the Beyhive, John Oliver was disappointed about the entertainer’s Emmys absence, quipping backstage that he was excited to sit two rows behind her at the award show. “All I really was thinking about for the last 48 hours is, ‘I’m going to be able to look at Beyoncé’s head in 48 hours … and experience happiness that I probably hadn’t felt before,'” he told reporters. “But, probably wisely, she’s giving this evening a pass.”
