Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ Renewed for Season 2: Get the Details

It’s coming back! Netflix’s wildly popular series Stranger Things has been renewed for a second season to premiere in 2017. The streaming service released a teaser for the next installment of the hit show on Wednesday, August 31.

According to the clip (which you can watch above), the sci-fi drama — set in the mid-’80s — will pick up in the fall of 1984. When show creators Matt and Ross Duffer spoke with reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour back in July, they hinted that season 2 would reveal more about Will Byers’ backstory and his mysterious disappearance.

“There are definitely a lot of cliffhanger-y threads at the end [of the season 1 finale],” Matt said at the time. “It’s open-ended in a way that if people wanted it, and Netflix wanted it, we could explore it and continue the story line.”

Fans can rejoice in the fact that the next season of Stranger Things will be slightly longer than the last. Instead of eight episodes, there will be nine.

“We’re letting the story dictate it,” Matt told Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday. “I think if it gets any longer, it gets unwieldy for us. We want to make sure it’s manageable and we want to be able to tell a movie-like story where it’s never treading water. We want it to have the same feel and pacing as season 1. I think if we extend it too much, it will have a very different feel.”

While chatting with EW, Matt also revealed that he and his brother, Ross — also known as “The Duffer Brothers” — will be introducing new characters when the show returns. “There’s going to be a lot of new and interesting dynamics that we didn’t see in season 1,” he teased.
