One of the investigators who makes an appearance in the documentary is Boulder Police Department Detective Jane Harmer. She explains that she agreed with a Colorado grand jury’s recommendation to indict JonBenét’s parents, John and Patsy, on charges of child abuse resulting in death and of being accessories to a crime.

“I think that the grand jurors heard the evidence and came up with that conclusion, and I would agree with their conclusion,” Harmer told Dateline’s Josh Mankiewicz, according to a press release.

However, she also agreed with District Attorney Alex Hunter’s decision  not to pursue charges against the Ramseys, citing insufficient evidence.

Bob Whitson, a retired detective sergeant at the Boulder Police Department, also explains his theory about the unsolved case in the special. Whitson, who was at the scene on day one of the investigation, said he believes in the “intruder theory,” that a murderer broke into the home and killed the 6-year-old.

“The behavior at the scene does not match up” with the Ramsey family, Whitson said. “It matches up with a sexually sadistic person and a psychopath.”

JonBenét was found dead in the basement of her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado, on December 26, 1996. In 2008, the new district attorney Mary Lacy removed John and Patsy, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2006, from the suspect list based on DNA evidence.

This year is the 20th anniversary of JonBenét’s death, which has resulted in several specials about the child beauty queen. The first of the true-crime documentaries, A&E’s The Killing of JonBenét: The Truth Uncovered aired on Monday, September 5, and uncovered several shocking revelations

Dateline NBC: Who Killed JonBenét? airs on NBC Friday, September 9 at 9 p.m. ET.
