Cher: ‘I’ve Never Really Been in Love With Cher’

Cher is a global pop icon who has been in the music industry for more than five decades, but she admitted in a new interview on the Today show that she isn’t necessarily her own biggest fan.

“I’ve never really been in love with Cher,” the 70-year-old singer told Maria Shriver on the NBC morning show on Wednesday, October 19. “She’s all right, but it’s like, I’m not a huge fan. I’m not a Cher fan.”

She added, “I just don’t know how to accept [getting older]. I don’t want to either, but I don’t really know how to. I look in the mirror, and I see this old lady looking back at me. I have no idea how she got there. If I put 70 candles on my cake, I would blow my brains out, you know?”

Despite her thoughts on getting older, Cher isn’t showing any signs of slowing down just yet. She announced a residency-esque 2017 tour called Classic Cher on Tuesday, October 18. The tour kicks off in February with nine shows at the Park Theater at Monte Carlo in Las Vegas before traveling to Washington, D.C.’s The Theater at MGM National Harbor for six dates in March. She then goes back to Vegas.

“I didn’t want to be finished [performing],” the “If I Could Turn Back Time” singer said on Today. “I didn’t want to be through with singing, and I knew that this would probably be the last time. My voice is still really good. I’m still active and running around. I can still fit into my costumes. I thought that this is probably … it’s now or never.”

Cher previously stated that she was done touring in 2002 when she embarked on the Living Proof: The Farewell Tour. The tour proved to be a commercial success and was extended multiple times, ultimately ending in April 2005 with a record-breaking 325 dates. (Cher later had a three-year residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and a 2014 U.S. tour.)

“I say you have to be like a bumper car and you hit the wall, and you back up, and you go a different way — and then you go at the wall again,” she said Tuesday. “The only thing I know is not to give up. I don’t know anything else.”
