‘How to Get Away With Murder’ Stars and Creator Reveal Big Season 3 Spoilers (Who’s Under the Sheet?!)

Last week’s season three premiere of How to Get Away With Murder provided some answers, but for the most part it left us with more questions. Here are four things the show’s creator and cast told Us Weekly exclusively to keep an eye on:

The Big Mystery: Someone “Pivotal” Will Die

The end of the season 3 premiere left everyone dying to know … well … who dies? At this point, we’re thinking maybe us. Cause of death: extreme suspense.

While viewers won’t find out who is under the sheet until the mid-season finale (that’s episode nine, for those starting a countdown), we will be able to use the process of elimination to fine-tune our guess. “Every week, somebody else is going to be alive,” Conrad Ricamora (Oliver) explained to Us.

Going into episode two, we can be sure of one thing: “[Annalise] had an extremely emotional reaction,” creator Pete Nowalk acknowledged. “It’s a person who plays a very pivotal role in her life.”

As far as the cast’s reaction to finding out who dies, Karla Souza (Laurel) called it “the worst thing” and admitted that she’s been “distraught and crying.” Translation: it’s someone viewers deeply care about.

The “Major War” Between Frank and Annalise

The biggest takeaway from last week’s premiere is the strained relationship between Frank (Charlie Weber) and Annalise (Viola Davis). “There’s a major war going on in that past. It’s scary because they know so much about each other,” Nowalk hinted. The season will utilize flashbacks to explain their current conflict, including some that explain Sam’s (Tom Verica) role in the relationship.

“Once again, she’s been betrayed by one of the closest men in her life and I think it’s going to be fascinating to watch if she can recover from that,” Nowalk said.

So, is there any hope for Annalise’s mental and emotional well being? “We take her to some pretty low places in the next few episodes and there’s some breakthroughs within that, so there’s happy times and some really tough times,” Nowalk assured Us.

Annalise and the Keating Five’s Renewed Relationship

Last season we saw a snippy, on-edge Annalise who didn’t seem all too interested in the Keating Five. This season will be different.

“I think when [Annalise] said, ‘We’re good people now,’ she made a decision in this premiere to turn around and talk to them, and I think that was huge for Annalise,” Nowalk explained. “I think she’s realized their lives are tethered together forever, so in order to take care of herself, she has to take care of them, and that’s not comfortable for her.”

Of specific concern to Annalise is the death of Wes’ father. So far, police are unaware that Wallace Mahoney (Adam Arkin) is the father of our beloved Wes (Alfred Enoch), and it’s up to Annalise to “keep a lid on that box,” according to Nowalk. “Wes is always going to be someone that she does everything in her power to protect.”

Will There Be Love?

It seems like every time a couple gets together on this show, viewers need to be prepared for a devastating breakup.

HTGAWM sweethearts Oliver and Connor (Jack Falahee) broke up in the season premiere. “There’s lies being told and secrets being kept, so as much as I found it heartwarming to see Connor try and forgive him in that moment, I do think Oliver in that scene is right, that that’s not an indication of a healthy relationship and there is something wrong there,” Falahee divulged. “But Oliver gets a job working for Annalise, so we sort of see throughout the season how that is going to shake out.” Secret office hookups, anyone?

With Frank still on the run and ignoring Laurel’s calls, we aren’t too hopeful for Flaurel to come back strong any time soon. “Frank is her addiction and it’s sort of withdrawal,” Souza reasoned. “She’s always going to survive, but it’s definitely going to take its toll.”

Our only hope is Wes and his new mystery girlfriend, Meggy (Corbin Reid). We don’t know where she came from, but she seems friendly based on her brief introduction in the premiere. “I think he’s just in the need of feeling, comfort and someone that’s not involved in all of this and also feeling normal again,” Souza mused. “With any of us, the murder and everything we’ve done is in his head, whereas if he’s with someone who has never known about any of that, he’s suddenly normal.”

We’ll have to wait and see how long this “normal” façade will last. Watch How to Get Away With Murder on ABC Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET to find out.
