Dad-daughter drama! The second official trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story debuted on Thursday, October 13, during Good Morning America, and it offers a few more clues about the stand-alone film’s plot.
The teaser for the spinoff opens with a flashback of a young Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones) talking to her father, Galen (Mads Mikkelsen). He tells her, “What I do, I do it to protect you.”
Back in present day, Jyn learns that her father’s whereabouts are critical to the Rebels’ mission to steal the plans to the Death Star — because the scientist was a key player in its construction.
Meanwhile, Galen is being controlled against his wishes by the Star Wars franchise’s most famous villain, Darth Vader, to make the Empire’s super weapon.
“If my father built this thing, we need to find him,” Jyn tells her friends (played by Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Jiang Wen, Donnie Yen and Riz Ahmed) before embarking on a mission to save him. “We have hope. Rebellions are built on hope.”
The trailer also reveals why the movie, which is a prequel to the original Star Wars film, 1977’s A New Hope, is titled Rogue One. It is the call sign that the pilot, Bodhi Rook (Ahmed), comes up with for their ship.
