“That would be really hard for them to do, considering we shot both of the movies,” the hunk, 34, said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday. “That’s an expensive mistake, I’ll put it that way.”

Both Fifty Shades Darker (out February 10, 2017) and Fifty Shades Freed (out February 9, 2018) — the second and third parts of the trilogy based on E.L. James‘ worldwide bestsellers — wrapped in July after being shot in Paris and Toronto. And while the Irish actor also admitted he “didn’t know” about any alleged switch, he wished the Vampire Diaries alum, 37, well.

“Good luck to him,” the Fall star continued. “He’ll be great.”

The late-night host’s conclusion: “I feel like that’s a yes.”

Dornan, wed to actress Amelia Warner since 2013, wasn’t originally hired to play the BDSM-loving businessman opposite Dakota Johnson‘s Anastasia Steele. The role initially went to Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam, who famously dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. The dad of daughters Dulcie, 2, and Phoebe, 10 months, landed the part two weeks later.

But as soon as Fifty Shades of Grey hit theaters in February 2015, reports started to surface that Warner was pressuring her husband to drop out of the forthcoming flicks because she felt uncomfortable with his explicit onscreen sex scenes.

And while Dornan, joked to 48-year-old Kimmel that the sequels will “ruin the franchise,” Darker’s trailer became the most-viewed within its first 24 hours following its September 13 release. The clip garnered 114 million views, surpassing previous record holder Stars Wars: The Force Awakens’ 112 million.
