Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman and More React to Golden Globe 2017 Nominations

Congrats, guys! The nominees for the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced on Monday, December 12, and Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman and more stars have reacted to their exciting nominations.

Portman, 35, who is nominated for Best Actress in a motion picture for her portrayal of Jacqueline Kennedy in Jackie, released a statement after waking up to the good news on Monday morning.

“I’m so honored to be recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” the two-time Golden Globe winner (and one-time Oscar winner) said. “I had such a beautiful experience making this film with the most wonderful cast and crew, and particularly with our great director, Pablo Larrain, that it feels like icing on the cake to be nominated.”

Kidman, 49, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a motion picture for her role in Lion, also released a statement expressing her gratitude for the honor. “This nomination is even more emotional, and I’m more grateful than ever before,” the Aussie star said. “Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press!”

Transparent‘s Jeffrey Tambor, who is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, reacted to his nomination in a statement. “Maura Pfefferman continues to be the role of a lifetime, and I’m honored to be recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” he said. “I’m very excited to celebrate our series nomination with the amazing Jill Soloway and my extraordinary co-stars.”

Lilly Collins, who is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for her part in Rules Don’t Apply, took to Twitter to share her enthusiasm over her nomination.

“The moment your mom captures you being nominated for your first @goldenglobes,” the 27-year-old actress — whose father is Phil Collins — captioned a photo of herself covering her mouth in disbelief. “I still can’t breathe …”

Ryan Reynolds, who is nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for playing Deadpool, reacted to his nomination by cracking a joke. “Thank you, Golden Globes!” he wrote alongside a pic of his comic book character dressed in a cheesy Christmas sweater. “As we speak, the entire Deadpool team is engaged in a grotesque, early morning tickle-fight.”

Sterling K. Brown, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited Series or TV Movie for his role in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, reacted to his nomination with a lengthy statement.

“HFPA! Y’all crazy for this one … and I couldn’t be more grateful! Thank you for such a tremendous honor!” he said. “What a wonderful way to finish off the year … wow! In recognition that no one gets to this place in their career by themselves, I have to first thank my wife and two children for giving me such a clear purpose for being. Ryan, Andrew, Amaré … you make this all worthwhile! Jennifer Wiley Stockton … thank you for doing so much, so that I can stay focused on the task at hand. Let us never part. Michael Geiser, you are unsung, sir! (And if you erase this from my statement, we’ll have words!) Love you, buddy. To my agents at Innovative Artists, especially my man David Rose, thank you for giving your boy all the support he could ask for. St. Louis, I rep you ’til the day I die! Rachel Bloom, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy TV Series for her role in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, tweeted: “WOW. Once again, you have made my dreams come true, @goldenglobes. I and everyone at #CrazyExGirlfriend are BEYOND grateful!!!”

Kerry Washington, who is nominated for Best Actress in a TV Movie or Limited Series for her role in HBO’s Confirmation, said in a statement: “Now, more than ever, we must champion stories that highlight our bravest voices in times of adversity. As an actress and a producer I am so grateful to the HFPA for acknowledging Confirmation in this way.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy TV Series for her role in Veep, humorously reacted to her nomination in a statement. “Huge thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Russian hackers that made our nominations possible,” she said.

Gael Garcia Bernal, who is nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy TV Series for his part in Mozart in the Jungle, said in a statement: “I’m so thrilled I was nominated for Mozart in the Jungle and that the show was nominated. I’m equally as thrilled Neruda was nominated for Best Foreign Film. I’m so lucky to be a part of both projects. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press.” 

Amy Adams, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for her role in Arrival, said in a statement: “Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who have always been so incredibly supportive of me throughout my career. I’m really honored to be recognized for Arrival, a film I so deeply loved working on. Thank you to Eric for his brilliant script, Jeremy for being an amazing partner and Denis for his incredible guidance and capturing the true heart and soul of this film. I’d also like to congratulate Tom Ford and Aaron Taylor Johnson for their Nocturnal Animals nominations.”

Mahershala Ali, who is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Moonlight, said in a statement: “I’d like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing and embracing our film, Moonlight. I’m sincerely humbled by this honor. Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney were so brave to entrust us with the responsibility of bringing these extraordinary characters to life. I’m truly blessed to have had the opportunity to contribute in some small way.”

Mel Gibson, who is nominated for Best Director of a Motion Picture for Hacksaw Ridge, said in a statement: “I’m very appreciative of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s overwhelming recognition of Hacksaw Ridge. This film was a labor of love for everyone involved, and is also about a man who truly exemplified love and goodness. It’s thrilling to see Andrew Garfield nominated today since he is the beating heart of our film. I share any honor received for this film and for myself with every actor and every crew member that came to the set each day giving their all to honor the story of our brave veterans, and most especially Desmond Doss, a true hero.”

Andrew Garfield, who is nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture for Hacksaw Ridge, said in a statement: “I am so incredibly moved by the HFPA and their recognition of this film and my work, especially considering the remarkably strong caliber of performances this year. It’s an honor to stand with actors like Denzel Washington who have inspired me since I was old enough to watch movies. I’m very proud of Hacksaw Ridge and I share this with Bill Mechanic, David Permut and Mel who led the charge on this project with great vision, humility, integrity and love. I dedicate this nomination and my work to the incomparable Desmond Doss and all those who sacrifice themselves in the service of the protection and freedom of others. He is a profound symbol of healing and compassion for the times we are in.”

Justin Timberlake, who is nominated for Best Original Song for his track “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” from the animated film Trolls, tweeted: “Woke up to a @goldenglobes nom! And then played hide and seek with my son before breakfast! Double win!Thank you, HFPA!!!”

Casey Affleck, who is nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture for Manchester By the Sea, said in a statement: “Huge thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this prestigious honor. It will actually be my first time attending the Golden Globes and I’ve been working for more than 20 years, so this moment isn’t lost on me. I’m so happy for the recognition this morning given to our incredible writer and director Kenneth Lonergan and to Michelle Williams, and for our entire cast and crew. It’s really meaningful for our film. Thank you.”

Emma Stone, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Musical for Comedy Motion Picture for La La Land, said in a statement: “Wow! What a great way to start a Monday. I am so honored to be a part of this incredible film. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and congratulations to Damien, Ryan, Justin and the rest of my LA LA LAND family.”

Jessica Chastain, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for Miss Sloane, said in a statement: “I’m thrilled to be acknowledged in this talented peer group with such amazing actresses. I would not be here without the brilliant direction of John Madden. Thank you to EuropaCorp for making such a daring film, particularly now, and thank you to the HFPA for this honor.”

Tracee Ellis Ross, who is nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical TV Series for Black-ish, said in a statement: “I’m very grateful to the HFPA for recognizing Black-ish and also mine and Anthony’s work on the show, in a year of such incredible work. So many of the projects that I love in film and television were acknowledged, and I’m honored to be a part of this great class of nominees. I’m thrilled to be included in a category of talented women of all different ages and races, each telling such different stories. As an actress, I’ve dreamt of being at the Golden Globes since I can remember – it seems like the best party of the year. I’m 44 years old, third series in. This is a thrilling moment, and I couldn’t be prouder that it’s because of Black-ish.”

Anna Kendrick, Laura Dern and Don Cheadle revealed the nominees in all 25 major film and television categories at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills on Monday, December 12. The presenters were also joined by Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Lorenzo Soria and Barry Adelman, the executive VP of television at Dick Clark Productions.
