Not just a pretty face! Kerry Washington, 40, never makes a misstep on the red carpet, showing off stunning hair, makeup and wardrobe choices, but she’s also heavily immersed in creating beauty products, too. The glam gladiator on Scandal has partnered with OPI nail polish for a special “Washington” collection of shades (“it’s not just the town, my actual name is Washington,” the star told Stylish) and she’s also a face of — and creative consultant for — Neutrogena. In her role, she even helped expand the brand’s foundation shade palette to create more options for women of color. She’s one of the best-dressed stars of Awards Season 2017, so Stylish breaks down the Scandal star and mom of two’s (with football-pro husband Nnamdi Asomugha) most stunning hair and makeup moves.

A true beauty chameleon, the Confirmation actress has been known to wear gemstone lids and bright lip color, but sometimes she keeps it natural. Take, for example, her luminous golden makeup palette at the Vanity Fair Oscars party. “I wanted Kerry to glow, glow, glow,” her steady makeup artist Carola Gonzalez tells Stylish. To perfect Washington’s skin, Gonzalez blended on Neutrogena’s new Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint in Cocoa (a perfect match on skin since the creative consultant inspired the shade). For dimension around the eyes, Gonzalez used a variety of bronze tones, including Neutrogena’s Nourishing Long Wear Cocoa Mauve Eyeshadow Palette and Pat McGrath Labs Metalmorphosis 005 in Copper.
At the NAACP Awards on February 11, the Django Unchained actress let the elaborate pattern of her whimsical Prabal Garung gown take center stage, complementing it with barely there makeup. Her center-parted shoulder-skimming locks also added softness to the overall vibe, falling in easy beach waves, created by longtime stylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew.
The eyes had it on the SAG Awards red carpet. Makeup pro Gonzalez tells Stylish: “I wanted Kerry’s eye makeup to look fierce, classy and dramatic, with edge.” After applying the light-silver shade in Neutrogena’s Nourishing Longwear Eyeshadow Palette in Smoky Steel all over the lid, blending into the inner corners “to highlight the area,” she brushed the darkest shade in the palette all over lids to above the creases, then wrapped it below lash lines for a dramatic gunmetal smoked-out effect.
Lips fit for a gladiator! Olivia Pope’s alter ego made us swoon at the Golden Globes with juicy blackberry lips — a shade achieved by Gonzalez layering Dolce & Gabbana Glam 355 Lipstick under Neutrogena’s MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Deep Plum. Washington’s hair also had glorious dimension, thanks to the addition of a few lighter clip-in extensions from her hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew’s line of TSDHair pieces. A combination of blonde and natural brown clip-ins faked highlights.
At the 2016 Emmy Awards, Washington walked the red carpet in a body-hugging Brandon Maxwell cutout gown that showed off her bump. But even more showstopping: her cascading crown of curls. Hairstylist Sturdivant-Drew boosted volume to “balance the dress and baby bump.” She prepped Washington’s strands with Neutrogena’s Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Mask to prevent frizz, then blow-dried hair on a lower setting to “add volume and make the hair swell.” After clipping in a few pieces for added texture, Sturdivant-Drew ran a paddle brush through locks.
