Miley Cyrus Saturday Night Live Cold Open: Jokes on VMA Performance

Miley just won’t stop! Miley Cyrus’ first Saturday Night Live hosting gig has arrived, and the 20-year-old got straight to the point — by throwing back to her infamous 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance! It just so happens, that her set alongside Robin Thicke literally destroyed America.

In the opening sketch — set in 1945 — SNL cast member Kenan Thompson described to homeless pal Noel Wells how the 20-year-old singer destroyed the country by previously whipping out the foam finger. Simultaneously, Cyrus was part of a flashback (in her teddy bear VMA threads!) being warned by her “old” self, played by Vanessa Bayer.

“I’m here to warn you that your VMA performance may be too controversial,” Bayer explained to Cyrus. “Nah, I think this performance is gonna be less about the singing,” Cyrus joked. The “We Can’t Stop” singer quickly got confused why it would be provocative, and referenced to her attention-grabbing Rolling Stone interview. “I must have smoked too much — cigarettes,” she boasted. (In the September 2013 interview, Cyrus said that cocaine is “gross,” but “weed is the best drug on earth.”)

Miley Cyrus 2013 SNL Cold Opener
Miley Cyrus jokes about her “controversial” VMA performance during Saturday Night Live’s cold opener alongside cast member Vanessa Bayer.

To top it off, Cyrus’ VMA friends decided to show up. Thicke (played by Taran Killam) and Will Smith (Jay Pharaoh) approached the women. “My wife’s cool with it,” Thicke said of his wife Paula Patton on the performance. Smith later exclaimed that his kids “are easily shocked by anything remotely sexual.” (A GIF of his kids Willow, 12, and Jaden, 15, surfaced shortly after Cyrus’ VMA performance in August, but it was later reported that it was actually during Lady Gaga’s opener).

Bayer and Cyrus closed the sketch with a duet, with Bayer giving the “Wrecking Ball” singer the American Girl doll Molly. The reason? The entertainer sings a lot about “molly” in her songs.
