Angela Lansbury says she thinks NBC's reboot of Murder, She Wrote with Octavia Spencer is a "mistake," though she thinks Spencer is "absolutely wonderful"

Murder, She Wrote? Mistake, She Said. Angela Lansbury considers Murder, She Wrote a very important, treasured part of her past. And that's where she wants it to stay — in her past. Speaking with the Associated Press about NBC's planned reboot of the series, starring Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, Lansbury said she opposed doing a new show with the old title.

"I think it's a mistake to call it Murder, She Wrote, because Murder, She Wrote will always be about a Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person," the 88-year-old actress explained, referring to her much-beloved character.

She continued: "So I'm sorry that they have to use the title Murder, She Wrote, even though they have access to it and it's their right."

The British star — who was nominated for 10 Golden Globes and 12 Emmys over Murder, She Wrote's 12-season run from 1984 to 1996 — stressed that she has nothing against Spencer, who will play a hospital administrator turned amateur sleuth. (Lansbury's Jessica Fletcher was a mystery writer and amateur sleuth.)

"I saw her in The Help and thought she was absolutely wonderful, a lovely actress," the theater veteran told the AP of the Help star. "So I wish her well, but I wish it wasn't in Murder, She Wrote."

As previously reported, NBC plans to revive CBS' Murder She Wrote with writer Alexandra Cunningham and producer David Janollari. The reboot has been described by Deadline as a "light, contemporary procedural in the vein of Bones or Fargo."
