Bobby Brown: Why I Performed the Night of Whitney Houston’s Death

On the night that Whitney Houston was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel room, Bobby Brown stayed true to one rule of show business: the show must go on.

Despite many critics feeling it was poor taste for the legendary singer's ex-husband to perform at his scheduled concert February 11, the R&B singer has zero regrets on his decision.

"I was in Mississippi performing and I got the call. Of course, I tried to get a flight. Tried to rent a jet. Whatever I had to do but it was impossible," he explained to Ellen DeGeneres on Ellen Wednesday. "So I knew the best thing that she would want me to do was perform. You know, we are performers. That's what we did. That's what we do and she would want the best for me."

On that historic date, Brown, who shares daughter Bobbi Kristina, 19, with the late Grammy-winning singer, broke down backstage pre-show and declined to join his New Edition bandmates for the opening song. Once he took the stage, he shouted out, "I love you, Whitney!" and blew a kiss to the sky, looking visibly teary.

The 43-year-old musician followed the same suit the night of Houston's February 18 funeral. After experiencing a snafu at the Newark, NJ-held ceremony and leaving prematurely with his family in tow, he showed up at his scheduled concert in Montville, Conn.

"[I'll miss] her voice," he told DeGeneres of what he'll miss most about his ex, whom he was married to from 1992 to 2007. "I mean we get to hear it everyday but just to see her sing was amazing. Where she came from with it, was amazing. That's what I'm going to miss…"
