The trend

Another loss for Leo! Leonardo DiCaprio lost out to Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor at the 86th Academy Awards Sunday night, continuing his streak of never winning an Oscar despite four nominations total.

The Wolf of Wall Street actor, 39, took the loss like a champ and was caught on camera giving McConaughey a big hug before the Dallas Buyers Club star took the stage. However, his subtle "losing face" immediately caused a frenzy via social media, and "Poor Leo" began to trend.

Some of the (hilarious) memes created included a photoshopped image of the emotional characters DiCaprio has previously portrayed, and a snapshot of him at the Dolby Theatre with the headline "Always the Bridesmaid, Never the Bride." A third photo showed the gold Oscar statue exclaiming, "Catch me if you can!" based on his 2002 flick.

The Hollywood heartthrob received his first Oscar nod at the age of 19 for his portrayal as a mentally-challenged boy in 1993's What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He also was recognized for his work in the Best Actor category for The Aviator in 2005 and Blood Diamond in 2007. His impressive film resume also includes Titanic, Inception, The Departed, and Gangs of New York.

McConaughey, 44, meanwhile, was the clear frontrunner leading into the biggest awards show of the season. He previously took home awards at the Screen Actors Guild, Independent Spirit, and Golden Globes Awards for the Jean-Marc Valle-directed drama. (DiCaprio did win Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his work at the Golden Globes.) At the Oscars, McConaughey also beat out American Hustle's Christian Bale, 12 Years a Slave's Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Nebraska's Bruce Dern.
