Scarlett Johansson's relationship with Oxfam International has fizzled out amid controversy over her involvement with Israeli company SodaStream. The Her actress, 29, has stepped down as an ambassador for the humanitarian group because of a "fundamental difference of opinion," her rep said in a statement on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
"Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years," the statement said, per the Associated Press. "She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fundraising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam."
The Avengers star first came under fire earlier this month when she signed on to appear in a Super Bowl ad for SodaStream, which maintains a large factory in the West Bank. Oxfam — among other activist organizations — is "opposed to all trade from Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law," the aid group said in a statement about Johansson's resignation on Jan. 30.
"While Oxfam respects the independence of our ambassadors, Ms. Johansson's role promoting the company SodaStream is incompatible with her role as an Oxfam Global Ambassador," the statement noted.
Incidentally, the actress' involvement with SodaStream is making headlines for another reason, too. As previously reported, an "uncensored" version of Johansson's sexy Super Bowl ad for the company has been banned by Fox because of its diss to competitors Coke and Pepsi.
