Debbie Rowe — the mother of Michael Jackson's two eldest children — can relate to Jessica Simpson, whose beloved Malitpoo Daisy was dragged away by a coyote in Los Angeles last week.

In 2004, Rowe's 5-year-old basset hound Ruufus was killed by coyotes in her Palmdale, Calif., neighborhood.

"I'm very sorry for her loss," Rowe tells Usmagazine.com exclusively, speaking out for the first time since Jackson's memorial and funeral.

Rowe says "coyotes are smart and hunt very well in L.A."

"When dogs are small, you can't leave them out alone – especially at daybreak night time and evening," she says. That's when coyotes typically "come out to look for rabbits and other small game."

After Rowe's dog Ruufus was attacked, "we were able to do the 'country thing' – we shot the coyote and hung the skin on the fence," she tells Us. "The coyotes moved on after a few days."'

She also tells Us she now uses "hot wire" to stop coyotes from entering her property.

Rowe has since gotten a new small dog, which weighs 10 lbs., as well as a 120-lbs. Belgian Shepherd Dog and a German Shepherd.
