Eddie Fisher, singer and father to Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, has died.

He was 82.

He passed away Wednesday night at his home in Berkeley, Calif., of complications from hip surgery.

"Late last evening the world lost a true America icon," Fisher's family said in a statement. "One of the greatest voices of the century passed away. He was an extraordinary talent and a true mensch."

He was one of the world's most famous and successful performers in the 1950s ("Anytime" was his first big hit).

He later became more famous for his scandalous personal life, having wed five times.

In 1955, he married his first wife, actress Debbie Reynolds. Four years later, he divorced her to wed his best friend's widow, Elizabeth Taylor. (He became Taylor's fourth husband; they divorced in 1964.)

Daughter Carrie, 53, has likened it to Brad Pitt leaving Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie.

“He didn’t have as big a career as Brad [Pitt's] to destroy, but it was considerable," she said last month during a TV Critics Association Summer Press Tour. "It is very similar and I did point that out to Brad once at a party, and he pretended at least to know what I was talking about."

Though she had a rocky relationship with her father throughout her life ("I saw him more on TV than in the planet," she has said), they went on to make peace. Said Carrie, "I have a great relationship with him today.”
