At the 2011 American Music Awards, chart-topping artists Katy Perry and Taylor Swift stuck to their respective signature red carpet styles — the "Firework" singer donned a bold, Japanese-inspired ensemble by Vivienne Westwood while the country star sparkled in a gold Reem Acra gown — but tried out new makeup looks.
Read through to get the full how-tos on Perry's bold makeup and Swift's flawless face — straight from their makeup pros at Sunday's award show in Los Angeles.
"I wanted to do a sophisticated twist on the "classic Katy" look to complement the Vivienne Westwood couture dress," celeb makeup artist for CoverGirl Jake Bailey told Us Weekly.
Face: Bailey perfected Perry's skin by buffing a liquid foundation onto her skin using a large kabuki brush and setting it with a dusting of loose powder. "I warmed her complexion with NARS' Blush in Madly ($27, sephora.com) and swirled a tiny bit of their Orgasm Blush ($27, sephora.com) onto the apples of her cheeks for a little extra glow."
Eyes: After lining her eyes with a liquid liner marker, Bailey applied two sets of false eyelash strips and coated them with COVERGIRL's yet-to-be-released mascara. "Then I lined her lower lashline with COVERGIRL LiquilineBlast Eyeliner in Violet Voltage ($8.79, drugstore.com) and softened it by blending it out with a small shadow brush."
Lips: "I used a bright coral red — it was the perfect color to pick up on the dress' coral accents and complemented her pink hair. I had Katy apply the lipstick directly from the tube and I refined the edges using a small lipstick brush."
Meanwhile, celeb makeup artist for CoverGirl Lorrie Turk was busy giving Swift a softer look. "I wanted to reflect the youthful, fun vibe of this event," Turk told Us.
Face: "I smoothed COVERGIRL Natureluxe Silk Foundation ($11.99, ulta.com) onto her skin followed by a dab of concealer on the inner corners of her eyes. I applied a soft peach blush along her cheekbones to add highlight and color."
Eyes: "With a dampened eyeshadow brush, I brushed on a taupe eye shadow from her lash line to just above her crease and blended in an up and outward motion. On the innermost corners of her eyes, I used a small damp brush to brighten and highlight her eyes with a white eye shadow. I lined just the tops of her lash line with a very thin line using COVERGIRL LineExact Liquid Liner in Very Black ($6.24, target.com). I finished her eyes by applying a couple of coats of mascara to her upper and lower lashes."
Lips: "I applied COVERGIRL ShineBlast Lipgloss in Dazzle ($7.44, walmart.com) directly from the applicator wand and then put it in her purse for any possible touchups later in the evening!"
