Sarah Jessica Parker was among the fashionistas who paid tribute to the late designer Alexander McQueen at a private memorial service at St. Paul's Cathedral in London Monday.

Vogue editor Anna Wintour led the service, calling McQueen — who committed suicide at age 40 in February – "a complex and gifted young man.

"As a child he loved nothing more than sitting on the roof top and watching the birds fly by," she told mourners, including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and a pregnant Stella McCartney. "His final collection was a battle between dark and light. His was an 18-year career of harnessing his dreams and demons.

"He showed us everything was possible, dreams could become reality," she went on. "But he left us with an even more exceptional legacy, a talent that soared like the birds of his childhood above us all."

When composer Michael Nyman played "We Were Gone," singer Bjork emerged from the shadows of the cathedral's curtains, dressed as a McQueen angel. She then performed the tune "Gloomy Sunday."

Parker, 45, shed a tear during friend Shaun Leane's address, an onlooker tells UsMagazine.com.

"It was your personality we loved," Leane said. "You were always true to who you were. When we laughed, we laughed until we cried. And when we argued, we argued with you until we cried. But that was the beauty of your extremes. I watched you grow, you broke the boundaries and succeeded."

A St Paul's Cathedral spokesman tells Us: "It was a beautiful service of Thanksgiving to celebrate the life of Lee Alexander McQueen."
