Vroom vroom!

Fast Five turbo-charged itself to the top of the box office this weekend — opening with a massive $83.6 million, making it the year's biggest opening by far, according to Sunday studio estimates.

The fifth flick in the Fast and the Furious franchise — starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and Jordana Brewster — also set a record for the best April opening ever. (The series' predecessor, Fast & Furious, earned $71 million in April 2009.)

Last week's number one, the animated Rio (which opened with $39.2 million), fell to the second spot with a haul of $14.4 million.

In Fast Five, Johnson joins the cast as a federal agent chasing outlaw driving pros played by Diesel and Walker.

"Summer began April 29," said Nikki Rocco, distribution head of Universal, the studio behind the new blockbuster.

Rounding out the weekend's top movies were Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family in third with $10.1 million, the Rob Pattinson/Reese Witherspoon film Water for Elephants in fourth with $9.1 million, and Prom with $5 million. Animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil failed to make much of an impact, earning just $4.1 million to land in the sixth spot.
