Whether or not she takes the surname "Pitt," Angelina Jolie has a brand-new title to boast about: Special Envoy for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Newly engaged to Brad Pitt, the mother, actress and director, 36, was promoted to the diplomat-level position after serving for over ten years as goodwill ambassador to the UNHCR, it was announced Tuesday, according to E! News. The Oscar winner will represent the UNHCR at the diplomatic level, working with governments and diplomats.
"In her new role, she is expected to focus on large-scale crises resulting in the mass displacement of people," UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards explained at a press conference in Geneva. "I don't think you need a rocket scientist to see the benefits that she is bringing in terms of the attention that she is getting for the plight of the world's displaced."
The mother of six (Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 3) has visited refugee camps worldwide over the past decade in her role as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. She and Pitt, 48, confirmed their engagement last Friday after seven years together; she flashed her $500,000 ring (designed by jeweler Robert Procop in collaboration with Pitt) for the second time in public on Monday during a visit to the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood.
