Kathy Griffin: Jessica Simpson’s Baby Name Reminds Me of “Feminine Napkin”

New mom Jessica Simpson can sleep soundly — Kathy Griffin won’t be making fun of her for naming her firstborn daughter Maxwell Drew.

“I’m all for it,” Griffin, 51, told Us Weekly at Feminist Majority Foundation’s 25th and Ms. Magazine‘s 40th Anniversaries in Beverly Hills Tuesday. “I get nervous about the inappropriate celebrity baby names, but, I actually approve.”

If Fashion Star‘s Simpson, 31, and her fiance Eric Johnson, 32, shorten their daughter’s nickname, Griffin may be less sparing.

“The nickname Maxi does remind me of a feminine napkin or a long dress that was popular in Gloria Steinem‘s era, but Max I can live with,” Griffin said. “Believe me, she would’ve heard from me if it was a fruit or a vegetable or a kind of wallpaper or whatever these crazy celebrities are doing.”

Other celebs weighed in on Simpson’s birth and baby Maxwell Drew’s name via Twitter, including Holly Robinson Peete, 47, Kirstie Alley, 61, and Alyson Hannigan, 38.

“For real, I am crushing on Jessica Simpson’s baby girl’s name Maxwell!” Peete wrote. “Then again, I named my girl Ryan. I love boys names for girls.”

Said Alley: “Jessica, huge love and congratulations! You deserve the most beautiful baby on earth.”

How I Met Your Mother‘s Hannigan, who is pregnant with her second child with husband Alexis Denisof, tweeted: “Congrats to Jessica Simpson! Does this mean I now have the biggest baby bump in Hollywood?”

Simpson and Johnson’s baby news aside, Griffin weighed in on another headline-making celebrity couple: Angelina Jolie, 36, and Brad Pitt, 48, who recently announced their engagement after seven years and six kids.

Though Pitt once said they wouldn’t tie the knot until it was legal for everyone (particularly same-sex couples), gay rights activist Griffin doesn’t blame them for changing their tune.

“I had to reach out to the gay community, and I said, ‘How do you guys all feel?’ And via Twitter and Facebook, they said, ‘We’re gonna give them a pass because they’re such do-gooders and they do such good work. Even though they said they would wait for us, we love them so much,'” Griffin told Us. “They actually got a gay pass, and those are not easy to come by!”
