As expected, Lindsay Lohan's first day behind bars wasn't easy on the 24-year-old actress.

When she arrived at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, Calif., Tuesday morning, she "was crying," Tiffany Hawes tells Britain's Daily Mail.

Hawes was being released after serving 35 days of a 180-day sentence for driving on a suspended license.

She recalls seeing Lohan "handcuffed" but notes that the actress was "calm."

"We all started saying 'God bless you, Lindsay' and saying 'Hi' to her and then she smiled at us," says Hawes.

Says Brenda Armstrong (who also was being released after serving 20 days of a 120-day sentence): "We all cheered when we saw her and said we loved her."

Lohan "was nice and smiled but she'd definitely been crying," adds Jen Devey, 21, who also was being released after serving 45 days.

After she was strip-searched, the actress changed out of her black leather jacket and jeans and slipped into an orange prison jumpsuit.

She was booked and then taken to her 12-by-8 cell, located next to E! reality star Alexis Neiers, who is doing time for felony residential burglary of actor Orlando Bloom's home.

Lohan will live in isolation 23 hours a day in her cell for the next two weeks for violating probation in her DUI case. (She was originally sentenced to 90 days in the slammer.)
