Gone, but never, ever forgotten.

When news broke Wednesday night that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer at age 56, the loss — and his legacy — was felt far, far beyond Silicon Valley.

But one of the first to pay his condolences was Jobs' peer and friendly rival, Bill Gates.

"I'm truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs' death," the Microsoft founder, 55, said in a statement.

"Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives. The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely."

The tributes from Hollywood — who harnessed the technology that Jobs and Apple brought forth to revolutionize movies, music, TV and pop culture at large — came pouring in.
