Heading to a holiday party?

Throwing one?

Celebrity party planner Mark Addison has a few handy guidelines to keep in mind as you spread holiday cheer. "The ‘rules” are not always as straightforward as one might think," Addison, who's helped out Kelly Ripa and Jennifer Lopez, tells UsMagazine.com.

Follow these suggestions to avoid looking like a grinch this season.

When throwing a party

Do make sure there is enough wine and champagne
The general rule of thumb is one bottle per two guests.

Don’t leave your bathroom messy
Make sure the powder room is stocked and ready. Hide any clutter in a closet or the tub (just remember to pull the curtain shut).

Do set the mood
"Candles are the quickest and easiest way to set the mood for any party or get-together," Addison tells Us.

When attending a party

Do arrive late
Plan on arriving about ten minutes after the party's start time. The host will appreciate the extra minutes to prepare. For formal events, guests should arrive within fifteen minutes of the time listed on the invitation. For informal events, guests can arrive up to thirty minutes after the party officially begins.

Don’t leave a party without saying goodbye
Once you arrive at a party, find the host to say hello. Before ducking out, make sure to say goodbye. "Otherwise, they might end up wondering where you've gone!" Addison says.
