Think before you speak — that's the lesson Glee creator Ryan Murphy learned after he cursed out Kings of Leon for refusing to let him use their songs on his hit FOX show.
"I didn't speak with as much clarity as I would have liked. Who am I to say 'F–k you?' That's not what I meant," Murphy, 45, tells the Hollywood Reporter. "I completely understand when artists don't want a show or another artist to interpret their songs. In fact, I respect it. It's their personal work and I'd feel the same way. We get turned down all the time and I don't fight it or even go back after a rejection."
(In January, Murphy called the group "self-centered a**holes" who "missed the big picture.")
Though the series has covered musicians ranging from The Beatles to Madonna, Murphy admits that like Kings of Leon, not everyone is willing to have their songs featured on the show. The most recent star to turn him down? Bjork, 45.
"She read the scene and didn't think it was the right fit for her song," Murphy shrugs. "I told her, 'That's completely cool,' and she said to come back to her down the road. We deal with that every day."
