In Popchips' new ad campaign "World Wide Lovers," Ashton Kutcher was transformed into several characters like "Darl," who is clearly a spoof on Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld.
Naturally, the Two and Half Men actor got right into character for the four men in the comedic dating video parody, but his portrayal of Bollywood producer "Raj" didn't have many people laughing. Instead, Kutcher's makeover — complete with stereotypical Indian accent and "brownface" makeup — had viewers up in arms, deeming the clip racist.
After the video went viral on Tuesday, Popchips' CEO and Founder Keith Belling took to the popular snack's website to deliver an apology.
"We received a lot feedback about the dating campaign parody we launched today and appreciate everyone who took the time to share their point of view. Our team worked hard to create a light-hearted parody featuring a variety of characters that was meant to provide a few laughs. We did not intend to offend anyone. I take full responsibility and apologize to anyone we offended."
