When presenter Christian Bale announced Spencer, 41, as the winner, her Help costars Viola Davis, 46, and Chastain, 30, showered her with kisses. Spencer was then escorted onstage by her date.

Before the actress could speak, audience members rose to their feet to honor Spencer with a standing ovation. As the camera panned to A-listers including Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Kristen Wiig, George Clooney and Stacy Keibler, Spencer fought back tears.

"Thank you, Academy, for putting me with the hottest guy in the room. I have to thank my family in Alabama. The state of Alabama. My L.A. family watching at Steven's. My Help family."

Davis then began to break down as the once in a lifetime moment sank in. "Tate [Taylor], [Michael] Barnathan, Kathryn [Stockett], Allison Janney, thank you for being in my life," she said.
