On Wednesday, Katie Couric returned to her old stomping grounds on NBC's The Today Show to talk up her book, The Best Advice I Ever Got, with former cohort Matt Lauer.
But the 54-year-old CBS Evening News anchor couldn't get past Lauer, 53, without answering some questions about her uncertain future in TV. (Couric's contract with the CBS Evening News is set to expire next month, and multiple sources have said she plans to leave that anchor desk.)
"There's an entire chapter in the book devoted to taking risks and seeking opportunities," Lauer said. "Have you heard any good rumors lately?"
"No," Couric laughed. "Have you?" (Lauer didn't address the speculation about whether he plans to renew his Today Show contract, which runs through 2012.)
When asked about her future plans, Couric admitted: "I'm not sure. I'm really excited about the future. I love doing my job at the CBS Evening News. I really do. And I'm just in the middle of figuring it out… I just don't know honestly."
Couric assured her former Today Show co-host: "I really haven't [made my decision.] I'm in the middle of figuring it out. Where would be the best place for me? What might be the best job for me?"
She said her future might involve staying at CBS, or taking on her own syndicated show. "I like the creative freedom that would provide… I think a smart conversation about a whole host of subjects would be really fun."
She admitted: "I don't love this part of [feeling pressured to make a decision.] But I also don't want to feel pressured by outside forces to make a decision quickly. I want to be methodical and smart about it."
"I'm hoping in the next few weeks to make a decision," she continued. "I don't have any regrets [from my time at CBS.] I love doing the evening news."
