Saying goodbye to NBC's Saturday Night Live after seven years was not a decision Andy Samberg made lightly.
Confirming Us Weekly's April report that he'd be leaving the sketch comedy show along with Kristen Wiig, Samberg believes his stint on the series had simply run its course. "I thought about it a lot and I'm still kind of torn about it, but it's the time for me," Samberg told Us at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards, two days after he officially confirmed his departure in an interview with The New York Times. "I can't really put it into words; it was more just a feeling."
What will Samberg — who popularized digital shorts including "D–k in a Box" and "Mother Lover" — miss most about going live from New York every Saturday night? "I have so many friends there — the writers and the crew and the cast — and [creator] Lorne [Michaels] is a friend and an amazing boss and I owe him so much," Samberg — whose exit announcement comes two weeks after Wiig's — explained to Us. "I'm also going to miss having an idea on a Friday and having it air on Saturday."
Teaming with Adam Sandler for the summer comedy That's My Boy, Samberg may not be setting foot in 30 Rock's Studio 8H on a regular basis, but as he branches out to take on additional film roles, the SNL alum isn't ruling out a guest hosting gig.
"Of course!" he quipped to Us when asked if he'll join the ranks of alums turned guest hosts Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey. "Who wouldn't?"
