Actor Michael Sarrazin Dies at 70

Actor Michael Sarrazin lost his battle with cancer Sunday in a Montreal hospital, his agent told the Los Angeles Times. He was 70.

Perhaps best known for his role in Sidney Pollack's 1969 film They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, Sarrazin was born May 22, 1940, in Quebec City. Raised in Montreal, he began acting in high school and moved to Hollywood in the mid-1960s; he later signed a contract with Universal.

Sarrazin made his film debut in 1967 with Gunfight in Abilene, which costarred Bobby Darin, and The Flim-Flam Man, opposite George C. Scott. The following year, the Canadian actor starred in The Sweet Ride with Jacqueline Bisset, who he dated for several years.

The actor's later films included Sometimes a Great Notion (1970), The Pursuit of Happiness (1971), The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972), Harry in Your Pocket (1973), For Pete's Sake (1974), The Gumball Rally (1976) and Joshua Then and Now (1985).

Sarrazin, who also appeared on numerous TV shows throughout his career, was most recently seen in the 2008 TV movie The Christmas Choir. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle and Catherine, and his producer brother, Pierre.
