Chris Evans sets the record straight on rumors that he wants to quit acting and just direct after his run as Captain America is over

Captain America will live to fight another day — or, at least, the actor who plays him will. Days after chatter suggested that Chris Evans planned to quit acting once his current run as a superhero comes to an end, the Avengers star appeared on Good Morning America to set the record straight.

"I said that I directed last year and I really responded to it," Evans, 32, explained on Monday, March 31, referring to a quote pulled from his recent interview with Variety. "I really enjoyed it, and I'd love to focus a little more on that."

In fact, the Captain America: The Winter Soldier star's exact words were: "I've known for a while I wanted to direct. But [time] never really opens up. There's another movie to do, there's another acting job. It just got to a point where I was like, you know — I have to do this."

"If I'm acting at all, it's going to be under Marvel contract, or I'm going to be directing," he told Variety. "I can't see myself pursuing acting strictly outside of what I'm contractually obligated to do."

Many people interpreted that to mean that Evans would not be appearing on camera anymore — but he says that's not what he meant. "[Suddenly I'm] retiring, hanging up the shoes, I guess!" he joked on GMA. "By no means am I planning on retiring. It's kind of a silly statement."
