Carrie Underwood’s Fiance Mike Fisher Loses Olympics Bid

You win some, you lose some: a week and a half after Carrie Underwood accepted Mike Fisher's proposal for marriage, the hockey star was turned down in his bid to play in the Olympics.

The Ottawa Citizen reports that Fisher, 29, was left off the Canadian Olympic team list unveiled on Wednesday.

A center for the Ottawa Senators, Fisher is "having a career year," the paper notes, and many speculated he'd be selected to represent Canada in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver February 2010.

The overlooked athlete can console himself by making wedding plans with Underwood, 26. On Dec. 20, the singer said "yes!" and donned the engagement rock: a flawless yellow diamond engagement ring. The ultra-private Fisher told UsMagazine.com "The ring was designed by Johnathon Arndt. I did ask her parents for permission. No date set for wedding yet but this summer sometime."

"We've gotten to know [Underwood] quite well over the last year and she's a great girl," Mike's father Jim Fisher said recently. "We just think they make a great couple."
