Gary Coleman is fighting for his life.

The former child star, now 42, is in a coma and on life support at a hospital in the Salt Lake City, Utah area, a hospital spokesperson confirmed Friday.

On Wednesday night, the Diff'rent Strokes actor suffered a intracranial hemorrhage — bleeding in the skull — in his Santaquin, Utah home, and was rushed (still lucid and conscious) to the hospital. By Thursday afternoon, his condition had deteriorated, and the star was slipping in and out of consciousness.

What caused Coleman's hemorrhage? "I can confirm he fell," his father-in-law Dale Price told UsMagazine.com late Thursday. Shannon, the actor's wife of three years, "has been by his bedside," Dale added. "We are hanging in there. I don't want to say anything else."

Coleman "always has had fond memories of being an entertainer and appreciates his fans for all their support over the years," the hospital statement said. "At this critical moment, we can only ask for your thoughts and prayers for Gary to make a speedy and full recovery."

Coleman's health has never been 100%. He endured kidney disease as a child — necessitating at least two kidney transplants and ongoing dialysis, according to the Associated Press. Last fall, he underwent heart surgery, which was followed by a bout of pneumonia; in February, Coleman suffered a seizure on the set of The Insider.

The star has lived in Utah since 2005, when he filmed the movie Church Bell there — and met wife-to-be Shannon Price.

He pled guilty in February to misdemeanor charge with regard to an April 2009 domestic violence episode at home.
