Knowing that the Academy Awards marked the end of 2012’s Award Season, several stars were looking to see out the last two months with a bang. Of course, that meant some serious statement-making style  — and a few fashion missteps.

At Elton John‘s annual Oscars viewing party in Beverly Hills, there were stars who looked glam (Miley Cyrus) and stars whose outfits were over the top in a not so gush-worthy way.

Gwen Stefani stepped out in a black and red netted dress, which resembled a gothic cherry blossom tree forest. Mena Suvari got her spring awakening on in a white trapeze frock adorned with chiffon blooms. Also feeling the garden party theme: Dianna Agron, who chose a flowered frock by Carolina Herrera that would have been better suited for a weekend in the Hamptons and not a high-fashion fete during.

A few miles away at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in West Hollywood, the fashions were anything but boring, but a few dresses in particular did warrant a side-eye glance.

Emma Stone chose a black floor-length design by Chanel that featured a peplum waist and mismatched sheer panels on the skirt that was plain distracting. Also in black was Zoe Saldana, who worked a Marios Schwab mini with a sheer, floor-length skirt; it would have been prettier without it. And then there’s Lily Collins, who donned a nude Monique Lhuillier ballroom gown with blue embroidery throughout.
