Michael Lohan: I Blame Myself for Lindsay’s Demise

Michael Lohan says it was extremely difficult seeing his 24-year-old daughter Lindsay handcuffed Tuesday and taken to jail, where she will spend the next two weeks in solitary confinement for violating probation in her DUI case.

He said on CNN's Larry King Live Tuesday that his daughter handled it all "very well. I couldn't believe the strength. And she was just very strong."

What "really hurt," he added, was seeing his 16-year-old daughter Ali witness it.

"Ali was a mess and it just broke my heart to [see] Ali go through it," he said.

"I just yelled to her, 'I love you, Lindsay,'" Michael went on. "They were taking her out. There's nothing she could say or do."

He said he has no one to blame but himself, adding that his own "stupidity" is the main reason for his daughter's recent hardships. "I should have reacted in a lot of ways before," he said.

In 2005, Michael got into a fistfight with his former brother-in-law at a communion party for the Lohans' son. He was charged with attempted assault. While awaiting sentencing, he got into a car accident and then was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He spent about two-and-a-half years behind bars.

He said his prison stint hurt his children the most.

Michael said he is now trying to make it up to his daughter.

He plans on visiting her "on weekends" at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, Calif.

He also said he is optimistic for his girl — if she stays off prescription drugs (Lindsay has denied his claims that she has a drug problem).

"I spoke to [Lindsay's former attorney] Robert Shapiro about three weeks ago. I spoke to him about — not about Lindsay, well, not about representing Lindsay but man-to-man, father to father, and with some legal background involved," said Michael. "Robert said to me, 'She's got to get off prescription drugs. I share what you're feeling, I know it.' And I said I feel the same thing."
