Two months after welcoming son Exton Elias, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife needed a night on the town.

They finally got the opportunity when the actor and his producer wife Susan (nee Levin) hit up The Avengers premiere in Hollywood Wednesday — their first major outing since their son's February 7 birth. A slimmed-down Susan, 38, wore an amethyst bracelet by jewelry designer Robert Prokop to honor Exton.

"That's his birthstone, so we have the little guy here with us tonight," she told E! News' Jason Kennedy, 30. "We had to leave him at home for the first time."

Robert wore a matching purple suit by Gucci. "This was all by design," Susan explained of their coordinating outfits.

How did the new mom get her body back so soon after giving birth? "Susan is like Gwyneth [Paltrow]: Beautiful, smart, focused. She earns her healthy glow the healthy way," her trainer, Tracy Anderson, tells Us Weekly. "No crazy diets or shortcuts. She has done the method properly for four years and did it through her entire pregnancy. She is such a great example for women."

According to Robert, 47, Susan "started weeping" when they said goodbye to Exton earlier that evening. "I had to get him in the car seat and let her know that he was fine when we drive away. Not that he was at the wheel!"

He added: "It's a testament to a good mother if you cry when they go away."

Calling his wife "gorgeous," Robert said that he enjoys entertaining Susan with his big screen roles. "If she's happy then I must be doing something right."

The Avengers boasts an all-star cast — Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth, to name a few — but Robert was most impressed with Chris Evans, 30.

"I think in a way, he had the toughest part, because Captain America — you either believe Avengers or not, based on, do they fall in line or not when captains run the show," Robert told E! News. "I think he had the highest degree of difficulty in a way."
