Sam Lutfi's lawsuit against Britney Spears' parents and conservators has gotten ugly, fast.

The Associated Press reports that the trial between the pop star's former friend and her parents, Jamie and Lynne Spears, is now underway, as Lutfi seeks the 15 percent of Spears' earnings he feels he's entitled to as her one-time manager. Lutfi is also hoping to restore his good name; his attorney Joseph Schleimer claims his client "was made a scapegoat for drug abuse and erratic behavior of Britney Spears." (In her book Through the Storm, Lynne accused Lutfi of drugging the X Factor judge and keeping her isolated from her family; because of these assertions, Lutfi is also suing for libel.)

In fact, Schleimer argued during his opening statement, Lutfi did his best to help Britney get clean when he unofficially signed on to be her manager, securing a team of drug-sniffing dogs to comb through the former Disney star's residence.

"He was terrified of being her manager when she overdosed," Schleimer told the jury, explaining that the dogs discovered what Britney told him was "probably" crystal meth — and that her drug of choice was in fact amphetamines.

Britney, 30, will not appear in court before jurors, although her parents were both present for Lutfi's attorney's opening statement.

Lutfi maintains that he did everything he could to protect the Grammy winner as her behavior became increasingly erratic back in 2008. (Ultimately, Britney was hospitalized, lost custody of her two sons with Kevin Federline, was placed under her parents' conservatorship.)

As for the infamous head-shaving incident? According to Lutfi, Britney's paranoia that she would be tested by a judge for narcotics use prompted her to cut it all off, TMZ reports.
