Tom Cruise is in mourning.
One day after Top Gun director Tony Scott jumped to his death from L.A.'s Vincent Thomas Bridge into the Los Angeles Harbor, Cruise is remembering his former colleague fondly.
"Tony was my dear friend and I will really miss him," Cruise — whom Scott, 68, directed in the lead role of 1986's Top Gun and in 1990's Days of Thunder — tells Us Weekly in a statement. "He was a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable. My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time."
The brother of Prometheus director Ridley Scott, 74, British-born Tony is said to have climbed a fence on the bridge and leapt to his death Sunday around 12:30 p.m., according to the Associated Press. The Los Angeles Times reports that police found a suicide note in the filmmaker's office but did not disclose its contents.
He had recently finished shooting the drama Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale. Scott's previous films include Beverly Hills Cop II, starring Eddie Murphy, Enemy of the State, starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman, Spy Game, starring Brad Pitt and Robert Redford, and the remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Scott also served as an executive producer on TV's Good Wife.
In addition to his brother, Scott leaves behind his wife, Donna, and two young sons.
