Delivering an emotional performance of Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" on the piano Tuesday night, the 34-year-old father of two tells Us Weekly he took special care to perfect the ballad.

"Since I have a range, I like to sing a lot of things, sometimes when it's not necessarily needed," Colon told Us backstage after Tuesday's taping. "[Coach] Adam [Levine] is great at dialing me back in and saying 'It's about the melody.'"

During their pre-show coaching session, Levine — who declared Colon's final routine "absolutely perfect" — tells Us he sat back and offered little guidance. Why? Colon just didn't need any!
