Eddie Van Halen is on the mend.

The Van Halen rocker, 57, recently "underwent an emergency surgery for a severe bout of diverticulitis," according to a statement on the band's website. "No further surgeries are needed and a full recovery is expected within four to six months."

The digestive disease causes pouches to form in the wall of the colon and become inflamed. It's unclear how long the guitarist has been suffering from the condition.

As a result, Van Halen's previously scheduled tour dates in Japan will be rescheduled. "The band looks forward to seeing and playing for their fans in 2013," the statement reads.

This isn't the first time Van Halen has been forced to take a break from his career to focus on his health. The musician announced he was cancer-free in 2002 after a two-year battle with the disease, and in 2008, he postponed four concerts to undergo unspecified medical treatment.

In February, Van Halen released A Different Kind of Truth. It was the band's first album to feature original lead vocalist David Lee Roth in 28 years. In addition to his music career, Van Halen was married to actress Valerie Bertinelli, 52, from 1981 to 2007.
