Lindsay Lohan is in the hospital following a scary accident with an 18-wheeler, Santa Monica police officials confirm to Us Weekly.

"The accident happened on the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica," Police Sgt. Richard Lewis tells Us. "The driver of the truck received no injuries but Miss Lohan and [a] male passenger . . . suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital via ambulance."

Lewis adds that his department is approaching the collision as an "accident investigation," as neither Lohan nor the driver of the truck were believed to be driving under the influence. "There were no signs of impairment," he explains.

Lohan's car was totaled during the collision, and an ambulance was called to the scene; despite the severe damage to her vehicle, a rep for the actress says Lohan is doing fine, and that she was brought to the hospital "as a precaution."

"She was released hours later," her rep assures Us. "She is fine and is already headed back to the set to resume work. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the accident."

A source says the accident looked "way worse than it is," and, despite Lohan's less-than-stellar driving record, adds that the collision "wasn't her fault this time."

On Monday, Lohan began filming Lifetime's Elizabeth Taylor biopic, Liz and Dick, in Los Angeles. Before scoring the coveted gig, the troubled actress — who was recently taken off probation from her 2007 Beverly Hills DUI case — had major difficulty landing parts. Lohan's last major role was in 2009's Labor Pains.
