More than two weeks into Dancing With the Stars, Kate Gosselin says it remains a "challenge" being a mother to eight kids and competing on the hit ABC show.

While rehearsing "one day this week during practice" in the basement of her family's Wernersville, Pa., home, "I had a little meltdown," she said in a story posted Monday on ABC's Good Morning America website. "And I heard them upstairs. And I just started crying. And I was like, 'I just miss my kids.'"

But she said she has to do the show because her family needs the money.

"I hate being away from my kids," she said, dismissing claims that she is hungry for fame. "If it could all go away because I was financially set and I could stay home and I could bake and cook from scratch, like I love to do, I'd so be there.

"But the reality is, moms have to work," she added. "I'm not the only mom. Moms everywhere have to work, especially single moms. And I have to do this for my kids and I'm doing it to better their future because I love them more than anything."

Despite harsh criticism from judges (one called her a "nightmare"), she managed to survive the first elimination round.

Her partner Tony Dolovani predicts she'll do better this week.

"Paso Doble is going to be Kate's best dance :)" Dovolani, 37, wrote on Twitter Saturday. On Sunday, he added: "Kate is doing a great job. I am looking forward to tomorrow :-)"
