Kaylee DeFer (who plays Ivy Dickens/Charlie Rhodes in the hit CW show) opened up her closet in her NYC home for Us Weekly to reveal a cluttered mass of shirts, shoes and purses. Us contributor Jill Martin worked her magic and transformed the 25-year-old's cluttered wardrobe into a walk-in worthy of Blair Waldorf.

When it comes to closets, "the goal is neat, visible, and accessible," says Martin, coauthor of I Have Nothing to Wear! (out now), a fun 12-step guide to decluttering your life. "Your organizational system should make getting dressed stress-free!" (Martin used Container Store's customizable Elfa closet system. This one added up to $2,000, but kits start as low as $450.)

Below, her rules of keeping order.

Keep bags in line: Martin stacked DeFer's many handbags at eye level — grouped by size and shape — on adjustable walnut shelves for easy access. (Shelves star at $10. All products at containerstore.com)

Conserve space: Huggable Hangers ($10 for 10) are musts, says Martin. "They quadruple the amount of room because they're so thin," she says. Stick with one color for a more uniform look, and group clothes by hue.

Display jewelry: Compartments in a divided tray ($76) keep baubles organized, and the flat top makes experimenting with combos simple. "Now while I pick outfits, I can see all my accessories at once," says DeFer.

Let shoes roll: Martin prefers rollout shelves ($45 each) to racks for storing heels. "Shoes stay in place and don't slide off." Plus, they're deep enough to hide pairs worn less frequently in the back row. "I love all the extra space!" DeFer raves.
