Universal Pictures and Focus Features are still hunting for their leading lady in the film adaptation of the steamy novel 50 Shades of Grey — and no one wants the role more than Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale, 22.
“I just finished the first book. I’m speechless,” Hale told Celebuzz at the MTV Movie Awards Sunday. “I think every girl on the carpet wants to play [Anastasia Steele]. That would be freaking awesome. I’m really curious to see how they’re going to turn it into a film.”
As for Anastasia’s boyfriend, billionaire Christian Grey? “You have to be sexy but approachable,” Hale explained. And according to her, The Vampire Diaries‘ Ian Somerhalder, 33, would be perfect for the part. “Looks-wise, he’s a good one,” she said.
(Somerhalder has expressed interest in the project, telling Ryan Seacrest “it could be very, very amazing” for his career. The actor’s girlfriend and Vampire Diaries costar, Nina Dobrev, 23, later vouched her him during an MTV News interview, saying: “Apparently he’s really great for the role. I hope he gets it!”)
And while Hale may have her sights set on playing the coveted role of Anastasia Steele, she may face some stiff competition from her Pretty Little Liars costar Ashley Benson, 22. “I’ve read every book. I want to play Anastasia,” Benson recently told Celebuzz. “I love her so much!”
